Enlighten Me

Would you do something that produces a positive outcome but is far outweighed by a negative outcome? Would you pursue something that hooks you onto nothing but a bad habit? Would you get yourself into a situation that is so hard to get out of, you will regret it? If your answers to these three questions were a unanimous No, and you're a smoker, please, enlighten me, why?

I have never understood smokers and I would like to try to. Why do people smoke when they are well aware of all the bad things that would happen to them as a result? Every puff shortens one's life so smoking to me is like a lengthy suicide process. I know the macabre images portrayed on smoking adverts are merely an exaggeration but it is also a possibility. One's addiction to the buds could actually lead to that in the long haul.

Smoking is practiced as recreational drug use. What is the line between this term and drug abuse? The main thing that concerns me when it comes to smoking is how selfish a smoker can get. What social smokers do in their social circle of smokers does not bother me but when second hand smoke comes into the picture, I would like to stand up for my own rights and anyone else who does not wish to inhale harmful substances, to be able to breathe in fresh air instead. Some smokers cannot care less about others. They smoke right in your face. I am sorry to say that I hold a grudge against these people. What is their problem?

I have always felt strongly about smoking. I feel diseased at the mere smell of tobacco. Smokers and non-smokers, what are your views?

no offense i promise! this is how i feel and what i think and what i'm supposed to do. :)

  1. Hello!

Well, im a non smoker and i know many smokers ranging from 17 to 70. I guess for those older ones, who has been smoking for the past 40 - 50 years, we cant exactly stop them as its way too long, and is part of their system. I wont complain about them as at least they dont blow smoke at others and smoke somewhere more private.

Its the younger ones that I feel should wake up and quit smoking before its too late. These are the ones we often see outside schools, or at the bus stops. And usually, they smoke to look cool. Come on, I know cool people who DONT smoke.

Parents who smoke, I feel you should set a good example to your children, and quit smoking to lead a healthier life. That's all i have to say

  2. I don't smoke cigarettes, other than puffing Sheesha once in a blue moon, but honestly, it does hurt my throat. What's worse, I was once diagnosed with Bronchitis, a lung disease caused due to inhaling the smoke of cigarettes, usually from my dad. Yet, I still want to puff sheesha. I am a living example of the irony whereby people smoke even though they know it's harmful to your health. Here lies the confusion; do people still do it to show off or peer pressure or influenced by the actions of adults or mass media showing children smoking on tv, or simply they find it destressful? There are many reasons why one smoke. My dad told me he started smoking when he was 30+, due to his excessive hours of work and the need to sustain his family. He was stressed out so he took up the sticks to destress himself. Now, worst of all, my brother was caught with cigarettes in school and found out he's been smoking for a year now!
Parents showing a bad example to their children and they end up regretting their actions. Many people perceive it as Cool to smoke, even my cousin who looked down on me when I was sitting away from him while he smokes. He gave me the look that says "You are weak ah"... I was like "If you're in a hospital dying of lung disease, who's the weak one now?" Why cigarettes exist in the first place? America says Freedom of Rights, or Free Will; they can do whatever they want, but it contradicts the Rights of those who want to breathe clean air. So such a debate about Rights is very complex if you are stressing about it... Only if cigarettes are banned from the world will it solve our problems. Advertisements mostly advice or encourage people not to smoke, but the effectiveness is not seen as the air is still filled with puffs of tar. Many neglect that such diseases are real. Only when it happens to them will they wake up and realise their mistakes (“Scars remind us that the Past is Real”)
Sorry if I’m writing mostly out of point, but I’m just laying out personal recounts and some stuffs I’ve learnt during my GP classes. I’m not sure if you can understand it ‘cause I didn’t construct these points fluently, but hopefully it tells you a bit bout what I’m trying to say. The only real solution is to eradicate the existence of cigarettes... No point asking why. It’ll just keep coming...

  3. the media plays a big role in why youths take so easily to smoking, portraying reckless, rebellious natures as cooler and more progressive than sensible and decent values. the media is financed by the big corporations. Tobacco is big money, and the media (movies, TV, the news) educate you all the time, program your mind and instructs you all the time, with or without your permission. just like with most things, the big businesses are not really concerned with the life of the man on the street, what's best for you or me, they're more concerned with making money.

  4. I agree with you on the point of selfish smokers. If they want to kill themselves, go ahead, just don't start taking other people's lives. I myself do not understand why people who have hated smoking for almost all their lives, would start just because everyone around them is smoking and every time I think about it, I would find myself looking at a really big example of irony.

I guess this is something that will never be able to explain fully as there will always be two sides to the story and like I said before, they want to kill themselves, go ahead. Just don't take other people's lives.

  5. Well, I used to smoke, and I an testify that it is a psychological dependence. You can quit whenever you want, so long as you have the proper motivation and sufficient support from friends and family. People that say they need to smoke just want to, and they merely use the excuse of an addiction to justify their habits.

  6. i have heard of people using smoking to relieve stress, but what is the point if it will result in a long term negative effect? and i feel they should not be selfish as to affect their family or friends.

  7. I'm with you in this, I cannot for the life of me understand the need to smoke and why this desperate need outweighs the long term side effects. I'd rather die single than have my partner be a smoker.

  8. It is THEIR problem since they have chosen it. Knowing its consequences and effects, these people are already MATURE and responsible enough to think for themselves. What I cannot stand most about smokers is when they smoke while taking a short walk from point A to point B, or just standing NEAR non-smokers and contributing secondhand smoke. GRRRR. We have to make the world a better place, people.

YOU all will think its utter bullshit but some of us really tried smoking. but its hard. like the saying goes " one stick is just wad you need to get u started " . its right, to a certain extend. cause some just act cool only. but they never even inhale it properly; hate fakers..

personally i try not to smoke in front of my non smoking frens or surroundings. respecting them.

  10. i agree with epiphany..

hmm.. i too regretted stating it, i was young and couldn't differentiate whats right and wrong..

quitting its like going thru "cold turkey" for us. you wont know cause u don't smoke or take drugs. its like an anxiety attack..

but theres no question that we can. but it will takes time.. cut down the number of stick per day slowly.. and one day you will find urself not smoking..

i know cause i have quited within a time span of 2 years..
you gotta have the will. but if you cant then its ok, at least u try.

different people are made with different will power.. haha
